This will be my first time attending this festival, and I'm really excited about checking it out.<br />
<br />
Hope to see some of you there! It was the first dulcimer festival that I had ever attended, this will be my 8th year attending. The first time I attended this festival was probably when I really realized what a cool instrument the dulcimer is and really encouraged me to continue playing music.<br />
<br />
Can't wait to see some great friends there! If you're a dulcimer player and you've never been to the festival you should check it out sometime at <a href="http://ngfda.org/">http://ngfda.org/</a>.Nathaniel Samselhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08062999766770055187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097524452092350989.post-85239298030192389962014-09-26T12:52:00.002-07:002014-09-26T12:54:39.507-07:00A New Journey <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span lang="">For a while now I have been wanting to learn about the tech side of the music business, because it involves music and technology, both things that I really enjoy. After doing a little bit of research I found that there is a small production company near where I live. I sent them an email to ask about possibly doing an internship with them so that I could learn about the buisness and learn the skills that go with it. Thankfully they were needing some help and willing to bring me on and to teach me about the business. <br />
<br />
So for the last few weeks I have been learning all about staging, lighting, sound, and more. It has been a great learning experience for me, I've been having a blast, and I'm excited to see where this journey might take me!</span></div>

I had a great time playing on the Pickin' Porch at <a href="http://www.clemmerdulcimer.com/" target="_blank">Wood-N-Strings Dulcimer Shop</a> this Saturday. It was a great crowd, and the Pickin' Porch is always an awesome venue to play a concert!<br />

For me one of the best parts about <a href="http://www.coshoctondulcimerdays.com/" target="_blank">Coshocton Dulcimer Days</a> this year was getting to jam with Stephen Seifert. Here is a video of us playing "Blackberry Blossom" during a late night jam at Dulcimer Days.<br />
<br />
Steve is one of my biggest musical influences and a great friend. He also recorded my CD for me. Speaking of my CD, this version of "Blackberry Blossom is a lot like the one that Steve and I played on my CD "<a href="http://nathanielsamsel.blogspot.com/p/cd-playing-in-creek.html" target="_blank">Playing in the Creek</a>."<br />

<br />
I had a great time this weekend at Coshocton Dulcimer Days in Coshocton, Ohio. I got to teach some great students in my classes, was able to jam with some awesome music friends, and had a great time playing on stage. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9u3EAZkIeyWlsbJ9EZwz2lbHJErq9vNeuP4J2o1iJustqWA6_kf1fQsEcbOiiZafhmjFbzgBBw9N9MKopyN_CvM02BG23EMVELVkPa1mzfFXn4CP5cjIYvE7733P_HVX-MkK7y9bIfkqN/s1600/Coshocton+Group.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9u3EAZkIeyWlsbJ9EZwz2lbHJErq9vNeuP4J2o1iJustqWA6_kf1fQsEcbOiiZafhmjFbzgBBw9N9MKopyN_CvM02BG23EMVELVkPa1mzfFXn4CP5cjIYvE7733P_HVX-MkK7y9bIfkqN/s1600/Coshocton+Group.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Since it the was the festival's 40th anniversary, they invited all of the past Mid-East Regional Dulcimer Champions to come and perform at the evening concert. And as you can see in this picture quite a few of us showed up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdrCeTldXHMfsowbb0kST6KVlGNeK8hMBdfyHoxOP9HKIKf-DCAzYx7ZLkz06HWhT0liIm4aqRFJMaJBIeTXxPGw7n-mb4KIWslUdNu5zb6yWVlMsLnB7toigWT4jR2VxG0-gpK335m5ma/s1600/Performing+with+Steve.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdrCeTldXHMfsowbb0kST6KVlGNeK8hMBdfyHoxOP9HKIKf-DCAzYx7ZLkz06HWhT0liIm4aqRFJMaJBIeTXxPGw7n-mb4KIWslUdNu5zb6yWVlMsLnB7toigWT4jR2VxG0-gpK335m5ma/s1600/Performing+with+Steve.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The highlight of the festival for me was probably getting to performing "Blackberry Blossom" with Stephen Seifert to close out his set during the Saturday night concert. It is always fun to jam with Steve, and jamming with him on stage is even better!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This will make the fifth time that I have attended Dulcimer Days and my fourth as an instructor. There's always a lot of great music around this festival and it's definitely one of my favorite dulcimer festivals. <br />

I really wish that I could have been at the festival for more days than just Saturday, however I was there long enough to have an awesome time with some great friends.<br />

And yeah, the highlight of the day had to be taking home the title of Southern Regional Mountain Dulcimer Champion for the second time! Thank you to Jim Woods from Mcspadden Dulcimer for sponsoring the competition and for donating this beautiful new dulcimer. I am looking forward to playing it a lot!<br />

So my new web address is <a href="http://www.nathanielsamselmusic.com/">www.nathanielsamselmusic.com</a>. You probably already know this since you did find the site but I felt like I should mention it anyway. <br />
<br />
And since I am already writing a blog now would be as good a time as any to tell you that I am now on Instagram <a href="http://instagram.com/nathanielsamsel">http://instagram.com/nathanielsamsel</a>. So I would really appreciate it if you would follow me! Oh and by the way, you might not want to follow me if you don't like fishing pictures.<br />

There are so many things that you can learn by listening to the people that you are playing with.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoIP_VCC5KfrVM154yc1RuW2OXc8odI5K0ZZX87-vH_K4a7w-mwNwDN0th8D7_Jm-13lTYybuHDoQAQBaDNEroWB3-PkQ3es2QkHeJEjOsTNXYxgS0oEHLdki7RHrLHedHBlUVWvQW3Pw5/s1600/Pickin'+and+Grinnin'.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoIP_VCC5KfrVM154yc1RuW2OXc8odI5K0ZZX87-vH_K4a7w-mwNwDN0th8D7_Jm-13lTYybuHDoQAQBaDNEroWB3-PkQ3es2QkHeJEjOsTNXYxgS0oEHLdki7RHrLHedHBlUVWvQW3Pw5/s1600/Pickin'+and+Grinnin'.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Although it is certainly more fun to jam with people in person, there is a lot to be learned just by putting in a CD and playing along with music that you enjoy hearing. This is something that I have been finding really helpful as I am learning the guitar. I find that it's really good practice just to play along the best that I can with U2, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash, or anything else that I might be listening to at the time. Even if you aren't at a point where you can follow along with the melody or the chords, there is still a lot that you can learn just from mimicking the rhythms of some different songs. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihVhyGCEsXIxjYTCZHW317XKkNzBni3iqzu2sz0DH2ZNNzd6P0itb2PzQexerDMZJSKAVRoJPpLOedqEELcELQ2BMTKI8so1c8mrXzqberOqlXMovzYmzkHvNoU89Dj79ET_DKWW7UruG3/s1600/P1320867.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihVhyGCEsXIxjYTCZHW317XKkNzBni3iqzu2sz0DH2ZNNzd6P0itb2PzQexerDMZJSKAVRoJPpLOedqEELcELQ2BMTKI8so1c8mrXzqberOqlXMovzYmzkHvNoU89Dj79ET_DKWW7UruG3/s1600/P1320867.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Me Jamming with The Who</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I am sure that this works better for some people than others. Because everyone learns things a little bit differently But I encourage you to give this a shot.Nathaniel Samselhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08062999766770055187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3097524452092350989.post-80317367400888212092013-11-19T09:26:00.000-08:002013-11-19T09:26:18.432-08:00Free Shipping <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But it has been a while since I have blogged, I can't sleep right now, and there are a few things that I could bring you up to date on with this post. So here it goes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqdshMfIrufmkFEOxkeVnEiUqZ3PWkRlKC6nyUHCLewRBWO3McFoiuzS37nt7x8sIo4DhQ1zF1_k2Osbmie2T0swseMpli2a01eUjp7iwI3dnWOROq2PPfOOvLMEDjKnm1TAMYbDKe2pFs/s1600/Homestead+House.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqdshMfIrufmkFEOxkeVnEiUqZ3PWkRlKC6nyUHCLewRBWO3McFoiuzS37nt7x8sIo4DhQ1zF1_k2Osbmie2T0swseMpli2a01eUjp7iwI3dnWOROq2PPfOOvLMEDjKnm1TAMYbDKe2pFs/s320/Homestead+House.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really enjoyed playing some music with my dad at the Homestead House for their Christmas Open House event. This event is always cool because it is usually the only time that I get to play dulcimer with my dad during the course of the whole year.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have been staying busy learning some new songs and practicing the songs that I already know. I have also been really enjoying my McSpadden six string baritone dulcimer. It has a really cool sound and is perfect for certain songs...especially this song <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLC9ErSYSnA">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLC9ErSYSnA</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1TtGiR15y2LjrR43IeFW42wUNykrQ2JEh61STG-ewgPtUtPHBxYTMj-nGMtEVq2yyaX1GHG-fO2yoWsKEXloiox9LxhD0cj07vZXgODulk9mdwbc2JhQX3x3MTjHDUuRa1VuPMP2jmCAs/s1600/Winfield.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1TtGiR15y2LjrR43IeFW42wUNykrQ2JEh61STG-ewgPtUtPHBxYTMj-nGMtEVq2yyaX1GHG-fO2yoWsKEXloiox9LxhD0cj07vZXgODulk9mdwbc2JhQX3x3MTjHDUuRa1VuPMP2jmCAs/s320/Winfield.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Speaking of that dulcimer, I don't think that I have ever mentioned on this blog that I got that dulcimer by winning second place at the National Mountain Dulcimer Championship a couple of months back. </div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: left;">
And on that note I think that I should wrap up this somewhat random blog post. </div>

The main function of the trip was to attend the Southeastern Press Association's annual conference. On the last night of the conference, they always have a Pickin' and Grinnin' session, where some of the musicians in the organization get together and play tunes together. They are always one of my favorite groups to jam with!<br />

The three of us jammed and hung out all afternoon Saturday till the early hours of Sunday morning. During that time we jammed in a cave, in the middle of the road (at about 2:30 in the morning), in the middle of the woods, and while sitting on fence posts!

Jamming with my musician friends is probably my favorite part about being a musician. There are so many people out there that I have enjoyed playing music with over the years, so I decided that I should talk a little bit about some of my favorite jamming friends. I also added a few videos of me jamming with my friends for you to watch.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Vc2f9SO_1jA" width="560"></iframe><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em>"Black Mountain Rag" with Jeff Hames and Wendy Songe</em></div>
<br />
I will start with Jeff Hames, because along with him being one of my first dulcimer teachers he is the first really great dulcimer player that I got to jam with. And of course any time that you can jam to Guns N' Roses with another dulcimer player it's a good thing!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="center">
<em>Pickin' and Grinnin'</em></div>
<br />
My favorite group of people to jam with has to be the musicians from The Southeastern Outdoor Press Association. Even though SEOPA isn't a music organization, there are still some awfully good musicians in the group. I always enjoy jamming with them during at the Pickin' and Grinnin' session at the SEOPA conference.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/jOoZPaeMtAY" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<em> "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" with Stephen Seifert</em></div>
<br />
There is no way I could write this post without mentioning my friend Stephen Seifert. Every time I jam with Steve, not only do I have a great time but I also always learn something new. If you like writing songs on the spot or just making things up as you go, Steve is the perfect guy to jam with!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/9EJbML-PDkU" width="560"></iframe>

<div align="center">
<em>"Old Joe Clark" with Eliora and Abra Kirk</em></div>
<br />
Last but not least I always enjoy jamming with my friends Eliora and Abra Kirk. They are some of my favorite friends to share some tunes with, and they always manage to keep me laughing between songs. Oh, and if you like playing Old Joe Clark in the key of A you really need to jam with these girls! <br />
<br />
If I listed everyone that I have enjoyed jamming with over the years this post could go on and on for a very long time, so if you aren't mentioned here, don't take it personally.<br />

<br />
Here is the latest video from my youtube channel. In this video I am playing the classic hymn "Amazing Grace" with my friend Mike Clemmer. The instrument that he is playing in the video is called a Clemm-Bro which is a cross that he makes between a dobro and a dulcimer. In the video I am playing my custom chromatic dulcimer that he built for me. <br />
<br />
Thanks to Mike Clemmer for recording this video with me. To learn more about his instruments and his shop check out his website <a href="http://www.clemmerdulcimer.com/">http://www.clemmerdulcimer.com/</a>.<br />

I had a great time this weekend at <a href="http://www.coshoctondulcimerdays.com/" target="_blank">Coshocton Dulcimer Days</a> in Coshocton, Ohio. I had a great time teaching some classes and doing a mini concert with my friend Hunter Walker at the festival. It was also great getting to visit and jam with some great friends at the festival. If you have never attended this festival I highly recommend that you consider it in future years. Thank you to everyone that made the festival possible again this year!<br />

I was sitting and playing my dulcimer at <a href="http://www.clemmerdulcimer.com/" target="_blank">Wood N' Strings Dulcimer Shop</a> in Townsend, TN when this lovely <a href="http://www.venturasoundideas.com/Default.asp" target="_blank">Ventura</a> guitar caught my eye. After I picked it up and played it for a little while I realized that not only was this a beautiful looking instrument but there where also a lot of other great things about it. Two of the main things that I really liked about it was that it great pickup installed in it, and more importantly it sounded amazing. I really didn't wake up that morning planning to buy a guitar at all so I was really torn about whether I should buy it or not. But a few hours later after playing the instrument some more and talking to Mike Clemmer about it I made the decision to buy it!<br />
<br />
Thanks to Mike Clemmer for the good advice and for selling me the guitar! Now I guess that I better practice playing the guitar!<br />
